It’s no secret that the substance CBD Oil has been proven time and time again to help with a list of illnesses and disease that many sick people around the world are suffering from. From using cannabidiol to cure cancer and alleviate seizures to smoking the flower to reduce depression and feelings of anxiety, it’s clear that this life changing substance is a medicine, not a drug.

Breaking News

In saying this, breaking news in New Zealand on June 2, 2017, Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne announced that doctors will no longer need the government’s approval to prescribe cannabinol oil to patients with certain illnesses, the non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant.

Child Drinking Medicine

According to the Otago Daily Times, the medical marijuana announcement came from Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne, who suggested the CBD deregulation.

"I have taken advice from the Expert Advisory Committee on Drugs (EACD) that cannabidiol should not be a controlled drug and am pleased Cabinet has now accepted my recommendation to make this change," Dunne said. "Therefore, I am now taking steps to remove restrictions accordingly.”

Before Dunne’s recommendation, cannabidiol was a controlled substance, with medical marijuana cases considered only on a case-by-case basis by the Health Ministry itself. With the latest rules coming into place, this will soon all change.

The Challenges Ahead

Importing

However, one main challenge to this pivot is importing the medical marijuana, as there is a limited range of medical-grade CBD products in New Zealand. Additionally, strict limits exist preventing countries from importing and exporting concentrates, which makes the process difficult for any country to get their hands on the medicine.

As the NZ Herald reports, cannabidiol was first allowed to be used in New Zealand when Dunne gave approval for teenager Alex Renton to use it in his last months of life. At the time, NZ Drug Foundation director Ross Bell applauded the decision.

“It represents another positive move forward to remove some of the barriers that patients are faced with in accessing medical cannabis products,“ said Bell.

Final Summary

Doctor and Boy

With the medical marijuana shift set, New Zealand will need to figure out how to best import larger quantities of the cannabis derivative. With countries like the U.S. still classifying the life-saving medicine as a life-threatening drug, getting CBD into the country won’t be easy, but Dunne’s party is determined to find a way.

Never the less, Dunne says that doctors will be able to prescribe CBD medications in as soon as two months, giving Kiwis across the country a reason to celebrate.
