This type of DIY project can be a lengthy process that takes significant amounts of time and requires some tools that you may or may not already have. Keep reading to find out what is required to actually make your own at home, including a step-by-step guide to doing it yourself.
What Ingredients and Supplies are Needed?
Cannabinidiol is a fat soluble chemical compound that is found in marijuana and hemp plants. Hemp plants were specifically bred to contain only trace amounts of THC and high in CBD. It is important to remember, that the levels of cannabidiol that are found in marijuana plants will vary and tend to be lower than what is in hemp, but also contain THC in differing levels. The first step before even thinking about how to make CBD extract is you must equip yourself with the proper tools and ingredients.
Several supplies will be needed to extract the liquid from your marijuana or hemp in this procedure. Here is a list of the basic supplies you will need in order to make medical grade cannabis oil:
- 1 cup of high quality oil such as almond, coconut, or extra virgin olive. You want to choose something that is high grade quality to get the most out of your cannabis or hemp.
- About half an ounce of organic cannabis or hemp
- Coffee grinder
- Glass mason jar
- Small hand towel or washrag
- Pot or pan that is large enough to submerge the mason jar in 2 to 3 inches of water
You can buy these supplies at nearly any grocery store, minus the plant itself. Hemp can be found online or at a specialty food store or herbal shop. And cannabis can be acquired from a medical marijuana location if it is legalized in your state.
How to Extract CBD Oil from Cannabis: A Step by Step Guide
Once you have gathered all of the above listed ingredients, you’re ready to begin making your own cannabidiol mixture at home. This is the fastest and most efficient way to do it, and believe me I have tried and tested many CBD extraction methods there is, so I know what I'm talking about.
This procedure will teach you the extraction process that you can do repeatedly. The results from it can be used for your pills, tinctures, and vaping oils. Now, let's get started with the process.
step 1: Grind that herb
Pick apart the buds, stems, and leaves of your plant and place them inside an electrical grinder (I use my coffee grinder and it works like a charm). Press the button in a pulsing rhythm until the contents are ground down into a finer powder-like form. You may want to shake the grinder a bit while you’re pulsing to make sure any larger pieces that are sitting at the top make contact with the blade.
step 2: Mix it up
Place the ground product into your glass mason jar. Pour the cup of high quality oil into the jar until it covers all of the contents. You may shake it around to make sure that all the contents are fully saturated. You can also use more or less of the ingredient depending on the potency that you desire for your finished product.
step 3: Boil it up
Place the lid on the mason jar and make sure that it’s screwed on tightly to prevent any unwanted leakage. Place a hand towel or washrag at the bottom of your pot or pan to prevent the mason jar from scraping it and put 3 inches of water into the pot. Place the jar into the pot.
Bring the water to just below boiling, which is about 200 degrees. You may use a thermometer for this or wait for it to start bubbling and adjust the heat settings on your stove accordingly.
step 4: Let it Stew & observe
Keep the water steady at this temperature for about 3 hours. Check back to make sure the water hasn’t evaporated too far because you want to maintain the water level high enough that it is heating all of the contents. If it has lowered too far, add more water and reheat it to the correct temperature. During this time, you should also carefully shake the jar to ensure all of the contents are saturated and heating evenly. Be care because the jar will be very hot. You may consider wearing an oven mit and grabbing the jar by the lid.
step 5: Cool Down then repeat
After 3 hours, turn off your stove and allow the jar to remain in the pot covered. Leave it cooling for 3 hours.
Repeat step 4. After another 3 hours of heating, turn off your stove and leave the jar to cool overnight.
STep 6: Strain & Your done
Carefully strain all of the contents through a cheesecloth into another container. Be sure to squeeze the cheesecloth thoroughly to get all of the remaining product from it.
Congratulations, your concoction is now ready for use!
If you find that the potency of your extraction is not very strong, you may want to repeat the heating and cooling process. This can be done over the course of multiple days to get the most out of your hemp or cannabis. Learning how to isolate CBD from cannabis can be a tricky thing if you're a newbie but hopefully this guide adequately explains the procedure to get medical grade products out of the hemp.
The Verdict: Is Doing it Yourself Worth It?
As you can tell, making your own CBD extract oil at home requires a significant amount of time with no guarantee that it will leave you with a final product that is concentrated enough to suit your needs. Aside from being time consuming, it can also be a messy process and may require you to purchase products and tools that you may not already have.
Buying cannabis oil from a reputable source is fast, easy, and simple. Make sure to review the ingredients before you buy a product to make sure they do not use anything that results in negative byproducts. The advantage to buying online is that it gives you ample time to research and shop for different products as well as a more affordable price and you don't need to worry about how to make hemp oil extract at all.
